If the idea of a couple photoshoot makes you feel awkward, I get it. That feeling is really common, and it has a cause. Once you know the cause, it’s a lot easier to plan around. So how do you not feel awkward at a couple photoshoot? You do something you two enjoy.
Why you feel awkward at a couple photoshoot

Picture a typical posed session. You’re standing there waiting for the photographer to tell you what to do. You’re hoping it looks natural, but it feels anything BUT.
That’s the awkward part. It isn’t you, and it isn’t your person. Nobody feels natural waiting for the next instruction.
What takes the awkward away

When you’re doing an activity you love, or something you’ve always wanted to do together, your attention goes to the activity. It isn’t on me or the camera. If one of you is the hesitant one, this matters even more. You’re just enjoying yourselves, and you relax.
Most people don’t realize how much bringing an activity into a couple photoshoot changes everything.
What it looks like

One of my favorite sessions was a painting session. We hung a white sheet between some trees. The couple wore white shirts, and they painted the sheet AND each other.
They teased each other. They raced to see who could paint the best thing on the other person. Then they painted cute things on the sheet.
The focus wasn’t on the camera. They were just having fun and making a core memory together. Now they have the pictures to enjoy forever.
What I do during your session
Before and during your session, we talk about the activity and what you’ll be doing. That’s where your attention goes, instead of the camera.
I reassure and gently guide along the way. With something to do, you might even forget I’m there. I’ve never really had a couple or person be that awkward or nervous with the way I shoot.
How we pick your activity

I start by asking what you like to do. I ask if there’s anything you’ve ever wanted to do together. We talk about your interests, your hobbies, all of it.
Really, it can be anything where you’re being yourselves, enjoying yourselves, and making memories. If you want ideas for where to start, you can read about an activity based couple photoshoot.
