How to Pick the Right Utah Elopement Photographer

When you’re searching for a Utah elopement photographer, the portfolio is where everyone starts. And honestly, that makes sense. You want to love the photos. But here’s what I see couples skip over almost every time, and it matters just as much as the images themselves: how the photographer actually works.

Style matters. How your Utah elopement photographer works matters more.

Loving someone’s portfolio gets you through the door. It tells you they can create beautiful images. What it doesn’t tell you is what it’s like to actually spend your elopement day with them.

Do they rush you through moments so they can hit their shot list? Do they put you in poses that feel stiff and unnatural? Do they know when to step back and give you two actual alone time on what is, let’s be honest, your day? Do they help you build a timeline, or do they just show up and follow your lead? Do they know the area well enough to make real recommendations, or are they figuring it out alongside you?

These things shape how your day actually feels. A photographer who makes you feel comfortable and unhurried will get you photos that look completely different from one who’s rushing you along. A photographer who knows the area means you’re not losing time to bad timing or wrong locations. None of that shows up in a portfolio, which is exactly why it’s so easy to overlook.

Red flags worth paying attention to

A professional Utah elopement photographer should be upfront about everything. What’s included, what the day looks like, how they help you plan. If someone is vague about what they actually offer, that’s worth noticing.

The photographers who do this well come to it prepared. Planning calls before the date. Resources to help you figure out locations, timing, permits, what to pack. A real commitment to making sure the day goes well, not just the photos. If you have to dig for basic information or the answers feel evasive, ask directly. And if the answers still feel unclear, trust that instinct.

The couples who have the best experience are almost always the ones who booked someone who made them feel taken care of before the day even started.

Why I do this work

I’ll tell you something I don’t share lightly. Just over 7 years ago I had a traumatic brain injury that took every memory I had made over 18 years of my life. Gone. Things I lived through, people I loved, moments that were mine. It’s just not there anymore.

It changed everything about how I approach this job. Yes, I care about taking beautiful photos. I always will. But what I care about more is delivering photos you can actually feel. Photos that put you back in the moment the second you look at them. Photos that tell the story of the day, not just what it looked like.

You never know what life is going to throw at you. I know that firsthand. The day you choose each other in your own way, with no performance and no guest list, in a place that actually means something to you two. That day deserves to be documented by someone who understands what those photos are really for.

That’s why I do this. And it’s what I bring to every single elopement I photograph.

What to actually ask when comparing Utah elopement photographers

Before you book anyone, including me, here’s what I’d encourage you to ask:

How do you help couples plan the day? What resources do you provide? How familiar are you with the locations we’re considering? What does a typical timeline look like, and how flexible is it? How do you handle things when something changes on the day?

The answers will tell you a lot. A photographer who’s done this well will have real, specific answers to all of it. Someone who’s newer to elopements or less invested in the planning side will be harder to pin down.

You deserve someone who’s genuinely committed to your day going well. Not just someone whose work looks good on a screen.

If you want to talk through whether I’m the right fit for you two, I’d love to get on a call. No pressure, just a real conversation.
